Betting on new Pope

I know English are crazy when it comes to betting. But betting about who’s gonna be the next Pope seems to be stretching the rope a little to much.

Tiago Monteiro near Jordan

According to some newspapers Tiago Monteiro is as close as ever to enter Jordan’s F1 team.

The fact that Midland Group bought Jordan (which was in a very tricky finatial situation) allowed the team to sign pilots based on what they are worth driving instead of what they are worth in money.

Tiago Monteiro is known to be highly apreciated by Midland’s boss Trevor Carlin after a successfull season at Midland’s World Series by Nissan team.

ITV: Monteiro to Jordan?

There has been no confirmation of a deal from Jordan, but the Portuguese media are building themselves up into a frenzy at the prospect of their first F1 driver since Pedro Lamy a decade ago.

Like Karthikeyan, Monteiro has close links with Trevor Carlin, sporting director of the Midland Group that recently bought Jordan, having driven for him in the 2004 World Series by Nissan. He amassed five victories and finished as runner-up to champion (and ITV-F1 columnist) Heikki Kovalainen.

Update: Record seems to confirm the deal.

Vodafone WiFi in Portugal

Vodafone Portugal announced their new WiFi service. 100 hotspots (28 already licensed) acessible to anyone with a 802.11b compatible nertwork card. To use the service you just have to send a SMS to a specific number. Prices are: 5 euros for 1 hour, 12 euros for 24h and 30 euros for 72h. I hope competition can bring these way down. Anyway it looks like a cool service.

Highspeed agreement

It seems Portugal and Spain have finally reached an agreement about the configuration of the new highspeed railways connecting the two countries. Unfortuneatly but not surprisingly the configuration sucks:

The map has been drawn by me and is probably not entirely correct but you can get the picture:

  • So where exactly is Portugal’s Capital anyway? Madrid? Are we finally a Spanish province as many seem to think?
  • Why didn’t they connect Porto to Vigo? Now that would be a great thing. Porto and Vigo are two strongly connected cities, both culturally and economically.

Bah, I hope at least it works and it’s finished promptly.

Skydiver in record Channel flight

And I thought that skiing at 60 km/h was enough of a thrill.

BBC News Mr Baumgartner had prepared for three years for this flight, with rigorous training including strapping himself on to the top of a speeding Porsche.

Helping the poor

Here’s something to make me feel proud of my little country for a change. The Center for Global Development released an article ranking the amount of aid each country really provides to the poorer ones. We are not talking about rebuilding what we destroyed and getting paid for it, we are talking about real help.
