The Thing That Should Have Been, Earlier

Scott Andrew has a nice review of Metallica’s new album St. Anger, even if I don’t agree entirely with what he says. I do miss the endless guitar solos and the fact that Hetfield didn’t know how to sing.

scottandrew.com See, here’s the thing: if we weren’t already familiar with Metallica and what happened with Load and Reload, we’d see St. Anger as an evolutionary step. I mean, I really like the direction: the ba-gonging snares, the complete lack of solos, the fuzz-tone guitars in place of the Mesa Boogie signature crunch. If St. Anger had directly followed the eponymous \”black album,\” everyone would be hailing it as an artistic breakthrough and no one would have batted an eye at the short haircuts and Kirk’s eyebrow piercings.

I wouldn’t have guessed Scott was a heavy metal fan :-) By the way the title Scott has chosen for the post is a little joke with one of the ‘Master of Puppet’ tracks: The Thing that Should not Be (aka as Load and Reload IMHO).
