One more reason Ogg Vorbis is
better than mp3. It seems that due to Ogg compressing principles
it’s very easy to get a lower bitrate by ‘(and thereby, size) of
an Ogg Vorbis file by chopping off high-resolution data from the
ends of packets. This makes Ogg Vorbis the ideal streaming
format as it can change its bitrate depending on the network
conditions.
Other formats, like mp3 or realaudio, need to recompress the
stream or have several diferent streams already prepared for each
bitrate.

VCR is a command line application I just found while searching for
some open source software for the
href="http://wikki.sergiocarvalho.net/index.php?page=Set+Top+Box">set
top box project me and
href="http://wikki.sergiocarvalho.com/">Sergio are ‘working’
on. Followig links from the VCR webpage I found out a nice set of
applications:
- XMLTV - A
project that will hopefully help TV viewing/record application to
get TV listing information from various sources. I just wish that
someone could create an interface that would gather information
from Portuguese TV stations (not that it would be of any use
knowing how portuguese TV station are experts in confusing their
spectators by changing their schedule every other minute).
- MythTV - Very promissing
PVR project with both on screen display and a web interface. Uses
XMLTV to get TV shows information.
-

- A collection of applications that could be used in a open source
PVR.
- EBox - plays
DVDs, records TV, plays MP3s and CDs.
- Video
Disk Recorder - Completely IR control operated PVR
